A fruit producer has voluntarily recalled one lot of GreenWise Organic IQF Frozen Blueberries due to possible contamination with Escherichia coli O145:H28.

The product was sold at Publix stores across eight U.S. states, prompting health officials to urge consumers to check their freezers.

The recall applies only to 10-ounce packages of GreenWise Organic IQF Frozen Blueberries bearing lot code 60401 and a best-by date of February 9, 2028.

The company clarified that no other lot numbers or expiration dates are included in the Publix frozen blueberries recall, meaning all other GreenWise products remain unaffected.

The E. coli O145 strain belongs to the group of Shiga toxin-producing bacteria, which are known to cause gastrointestinal illnesses that can become severe.

The most common symptoms include intense abdominal cramps, diarrhea—which may become bloody—as well as vomiting and digestive discomfort.

Although most people recover within about one week, some patients may develop hemolytic uremic syndrome, a potentially serious complication.

Health officials warn that the risk is greatest for young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems, who should seek immediate medical attention if symptoms develop.

Twelve people reported illnesses linked to the frozen blueberries

The company said the recall began after receiving reports from consumers who experienced digestive illnesses after eating the frozen blueberries.

So far, 12 illnesses linked to E. coli O145:H28 infections have been confirmed, with cases occurring between May 11 and June 5, 2026.

As part of its response, the company notified customers to immediately remove the affected lot from store shelves and halt any further distribution.

The company also said it is cooperating with regulatory authorities while the investigation continues to determine the source of the potential contamination.

Consumers who have GreenWise blueberries from the affected lot at home are urged not to consume them under any circumstances.

The official recommendation is to safely dispose of the product or return it to the store where it was purchased for a full refund.

The company stated that food safety remains a top priority and said it is working to determine how the issue that prompted the precautionary recall occurred.

While the investigation continues, health officials are urging consumers to carefully verify the product code before eating frozen blueberries and to stay alert for any updates related to the Publix frozen blueberries recall, according to the FDA.
