• Ecuadorian TV host sparks widespread outrage.
  • Celebrated Mexico’s defeat.
  • Social media users demand her removal from television.

The passion and tension surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup have spilled beyond the pitch and onto social media platforms.

In recent hours, Ecuadorian actress, TV host, and content creator Alejandra Jaramillo has become the center of a major online controversy.

The backlash erupted after she enthusiastically celebrated Mexico’s painful 3-2 elimination by England, sparking outrage among thousands of Mexican soccer fans.

The Celebration That Ignited the Social Media Controversy

The controversy began after the TV host posted Instagram Stories showing herself jumping, cheering, and celebrating alongside a group of friends following England’s victory over Mexico in the July 5 match.

Jaramillo accompanied the videos with captions such as, «I only wanted one thing so I could sleep peacefully tonight,» and publicly thanked players including Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham.

She also jokingly revisited an earlier video in which she claimed she had «bad luck» and «jinxed» every jersey she touched, adding, «I told you I jinxed every jersey I touched. I just didn’t tell you it would take a few more days to work.»

The reaction from Mexican fans was immediate, with many describing her behavior as deeply disrespectful. Much of the criticism stems from the fact that a significant portion of her current career and audience is closely tied to Mexico and the Hispanic community in the United States.

Alejandra Jaramillo, popularly known in her native Ecuador as «La Caramelo,» built a successful career in Ecuadorian television through entertainment programs and dramatic productions.

Her charisma and straightforward personality eventually opened the door to the U.S. market, where she currently works for TelevisaUnivision as a panelist on the entertainment show Siéntese Quien Pueda.

Despite her frequent interactions with Mexican celebrities, including singer Peso Pluma, and her numerous visits to Mexico, the TV host’s playful social media posts crossed what many followers considered the fine line between sports rivalry and personal offense, prompting a wave of online backlash against her.

The comments section on Jaramillo’s Instagram profile quickly turned into a battleground. While Ecuadorian users defended her right to support any national team she chooses, hundreds of Mexican users demanded that her account be reported and called for her dismissal from the television network, arguing that she should not «bite the hand that feeds you,» referencing the Mexican investment and merger behind Univision.

Comments such as, «Someone is going to lose their job if she doesn’t apologize,» and «Mexico deserves respect, or we’ll make sure we get it,» flooded her recent posts.

In response to the criticism, Jaramillo issued a firm statement arguing that her celebration was motivated by the previous behavior of some Mexican fans. She accused certain supporters of gathering outside Ecuador’s national team hotel in the middle of the night during past matches in an effort to keep the players from sleeping.

«What goes up must come down, which is why it’s always worth staying humble whether you win or lose. Visitors should be welcomed, not humiliated or mistreated… today it was England plus 18 million Ecuadorians,» she said while defending her reaction to Mexico’s defeat. Although her partner, content creator Beta Mejía, attempted to calm tensions by posting a video encouraging unity and peace through soccer, Ale Jaramillo stood by her position and concluded by saying that she will celebrate whichever country she wants because no one has the right to dictate her emotions when it comes to sports.
