Two adults were traveling in the TDOT vehicle.

One person was inside the Chevrolet Trailblazer.

Highway Patrol spokesperson Major Travis Plotzer described the incident as “every parent’s worst nightmare.”

Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash.

Victims, injuries, and medical response

Two students lost their lives at the scene or as a result of the school bus crash.

At least seven people were injured and transported by helicopter to hospitals.

The transfers included medical centers in Memphis and Nashville.

Four individuals were taken to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville.

According to a Vanderbilt Health spokesperson, those patients were in stable condition on Friday.

Additionally, 19 other people were taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Carroll County.

According to the health system, all were evaluated and later discharged.

It has not been specified how many of them had injuries.

Community faces an unexpected tragedy after the school bus crash

The school’s principal, Karen Miller, described the accident as an unimaginable tragedy.

In a message to families, she urged emotional support for students.

She also announced that counselors will be available starting Monday.

Miller encouraged parents to be attentive to their children’s emotional needs.

“I ask that you continue praying with us for our students, families, teachers, and staff,” she wrote.

She added that she trusts in the strength of the school community to get through this moment.

The bus was traveling to participate in the Toyota Hub City Grand Prix Greenpower USA race in Jackson.

The superintendent of Jackson-Madison County said they are “completely devastated.”

He also described the loss as “immeasurable.”

The investigation into the causes of the accident is ongoing.
