Social Security will send the final regular payment of the month on Wednesday, August 26, to millions of retirees who are still waiting for their deposit.

The payment is for beneficiaries born between the 21st and 31st of the month, while anticipation is growing over another key figure: how much Social Security checks will increase in 2027.

  • Why it matters: Retirees are not only waiting for this final August deposit. Upcoming inflation data will help determine the Social Security COLA 2027, which will be announced in October.

Who Receives the Final Social Security Payment in August?

The Social Security Administration (SSA) distributes many of its payments according to the beneficiary’s date of birth.

  • In August, those born between the 1st and 10th received their payment on Wednesday, August 12.
  • Those born between the 11th and 20th had their deposit scheduled for Wednesday, August 19.

Finally, those born between the 21st and 31st are scheduled to receive their payment on Wednesday, August 26, according to the SSA’s official calendar.

This schedule does not apply in the same way to everyone:

Those who began receiving benefits before May 1997, or who receive both Social Security and SSI, follow a different payment schedule. This group received its check on August 3.

Retirees Await the Social Security COLA 2027 Increase

After the August payment, one of the biggest questions will be how much Social Security benefits will increase in 2027.

The answer will depend on the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), which is intended to help offset rising prices.

To determine the adjustment, the SSA compares the average inflation rate for July, August and September with the corresponding average from the previous year.

July has already started that calculation. However, inflation figures for August and September are still needed before the final percentage can be determined.

  • According to a projection from The Senior Citizens League cited by MundoNOW, the Social Security COLA 2027 could currently be around 3.6%.

A 3.6% COLA Could Add About $75 a Month

If that estimate ultimately holds, a retiree receiving an average monthly benefit of about $2,071 could get approximately $75 more each month.

  • That would bring the monthly check to around $2,146, although the actual increase will depend on each person’s individual benefit.
  • The 3.6% estimate has not yet been confirmed. Inflation data for August and September could push the projection higher or lower.

The final Social Security COLA 2027 will be announced in October, when retirees will learn how much their payments could increase next year.
