A powerful earthquake struck southern Peru on Thursday and was felt as far away as Lima, prompting precautionary evacuations as authorities activated emergency protocols.

The earthquake was centered in Ayacucho and was felt across several regions of the country. Authorities were assessing possible damage following the strong quake.

USGS Reports Peru Earthquake Today at Magnitude 6.7

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the earthquake at a magnitude of 6.7 and a depth of approximately 66.7 kilometers (41 miles).

According to Telemundo, the epicenter was located about 20 miles northwest of Upahuacho, in the Ayacucho region.

The Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP), however, reported a magnitude of 7.2, meaning initial measurements varied depending on the institution.

Authorities Assess Possible Damage After Peru Earthquake

Luis Vasquez, head of Civil Defense, told RPP that “at this time, no damage of any kind has been reported.”

Yony Reyes, mayor of Parinacochas province, also said there were initially no reports of damage in the provincial capital.

Peru experiences frequent seismic activity because of its location along the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a vast region characterized by high levels of tectonic activity.
