According to CNN, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was originally from Mexico and had lived in the United States for approximately 35 years.
He was married, the father of three children, and worked in the construction industry, according to La Nación.
His son, Ronaldo Salgado, told Telemundo that his father regularly picked up construction workers and drove them to job sites.
«I know he was picking people up to take them to construction jobs, and they told me he never made it to work.»

According to his family, Salgado Araujo had been pursuing immigration procedures to obtain legal authorization to work.
They also said he was attempting to regularize his immigration status through available legal channels.
Despite those efforts, ICE identified him as being in the country without legal authorization.
The operation ended with agents firing at the vehicle he was driving. He was transported to a hospital, where authorities later confirmed his death.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released a statement outlining its account of the incident.
According to the agency, the driver attempted to flee during the operation.
DHS stated that the vehicle struck one of the federal agents’ vehicles.
The agency further alleged that the vehicle was then driven toward one of the officers at the scene.

«He used his vehicle as a weapon in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer, which resulted in our agent discharging his firearm in self-defense.»
The agency also said emergency medical services were requested immediately after the shooting.

«The driver was struck, and emergency medical services were immediately contacted.»
DHS reiterated that the purpose of the operation was to apprehend an individual who was allegedly in the country without legal immigration status.
Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was transported to a hospital, where his death was later confirmed.
Family Questions the Operation as Investigations Continue
Following the incident, the DHS Office of Inspector General assumed responsibility for investigating the use of force.
At the same time, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) opened a separate investigation.
The FBI’s inquiry is focused on determining whether a federal law enforcement officer was assaulted during the operation.
As the investigations continue, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo’s family has raised concerns about the actions of the agents involved.
Ronaldo Salgado said he viewed videos of the operation that circulated on social media.
According to his account, he saw his father wounded after the shooting.
