- Hispanic Vote Shapes the Election
According to the EFE news agency, support from Latino voters was decisive in James Talarico’s victory in the Texas Democratic primaries, based on electoral data.
The state legislator and Presbyterian seminarian won the internal election in a race that recorded historic voter participation.
The result revitalized the opposition party and positioned Talarico as one of the Democratic Party’s leading figures in a key election year.
Why it matters: The November midterm elections will determine whether the opposition can use Congress to block President Donald Trump’s agenda or whether the governing party maintains legislative control.

Election results showed that Latino voter support was key to Talarico’s win in the primaries.
In Texas, Hispanics make up 40.2% of the state’s population, according to the most recent census.
In counties where Hispanic voters represent the largest group within the Democratic electorate, Talarico secured a 22-point advantage.
That margin ultimately proved decisive in ensuring his victory in the party’s internal contest.
Data compiled by The New York Times indicates that Latino support made the difference in several regions.

This was especially evident in the Rio Grande Valley, a border region with a majority Latino population.
In that area, the Democratic candidate received more than 60% of the vote.
The outcome has sparked expectations within the opposition party regarding the role the Latino vote in Texas primaries could play in the November elections.
Strategy Focused on Hispanic Communities
James Talarico’s campaign team attributed part of the electoral success to a strategy focused on Latino communities.
Chuck Rocha, a strategist and adviser for the campaign, said that direct engagement with these communities was key to the result.
The campaign invested in on-the-ground outreach and Spanish-language advertising.
“Latinos will return to the Democratic Party if you step forward and give them a message of hope,” Rocha said in a video posted on social media after the results were announced.
The candidate’s message also aimed to connect with voters who do not necessarily identify strongly with the Democratic Party.
Sebastián Bernal, an American of Colombian origin who grew up in Texas, said Talarico’s message resonates with groups that do not typically participate actively in politics.
“I feel like he includes people who don’t participate very often and who are tired of the current government,” Bernal said during an event organized by Talarico in Austin.
Key Election on the Road to the Texas Senate
After winning the primaries, Talarico now faces the challenge of competing for one of the two seats in the Texas Senate.
It is a position that no Democrat has won in the state since 1994.
The November race will be part of the midterm elections, in which a large portion of Congress will be renewed.
The outcome of those elections will play a crucial role in determining the balance of power in Washington.
During his campaign speeches, Talarico focused his message on economic inequality and growing frustration with political polarization in the country.
The candidate has also emphasized the idea of “loving one’s neighbor” as a way to bridge divides between different sectors of society.
“This is not a fight between the left and the right, but between those at the top and those at the bottom,” the candidate said at several rallies across the state.
For now, it is still unclear who his Republican opponent will be in the November election.
The Republican primary ended without a clear winner.
Current Senator John Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton will face each other in a runoff scheduled for May.
