New Mexico Challenges the Trump Administration Over Jeffrey Epstein Files

The state of New Mexico filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, seeking access to unredacted documents connected to Jeffrey Epstein and his Zorro Ranch estate in Santa Fe County.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Washington, seeks to compel the federal government to release information that New Mexico officials say is essential to advancing the state’s own criminal investigation into alleged sexual abuse and exploitation connected to the late financier.

Why Did New Mexico File the Lawsuit?

The complaint argues that the Department of Justice failed to honor its commitment to share the Jeffrey Epstein files gathered during the federal investigation.

According to New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez, federal authorities asked the state in 2019 to suspend its own investigation into Zorro Ranch while the national investigation was underway, promising that the information collected would later be shared.

However, the state says that cooperation never materialized and that the federal government continues to withhold unredacted documents that could be critical to identifying victims, witnesses, and possible suspects.

The lawsuit does not seek to establish new legal responsibility for Jeffrey Epstein. Instead, it challenges the Department of Justice’s refusal to release information that could be relevant to state investigators.
