JCPenney Announces Permanent Florida Closure as Historic Mall Transforms

- JCPenney Announces Permanent Florida Closure
- Mall Renovation
- New Development With Costco
One of the most iconic stores in Sanford, Florida, is saying goodbye to customers after nearly three decades in operation.
The JCPenney branch located at Seminole Towne Center will close permanently on May 25.
The announcement marks another chapter in the transformation of a shopping mall that was once a key gathering place for the community.
The decision comes after the sale of the property, as the complex begins an ambitious redevelopment plan.
A Historic Store Comes to an End

The store opened its doors in 1995, when the mall was experiencing one of its strongest periods.
Over the years, visitor traffic declined and the number of active businesses began to shrink.

In January 2025, Seminole Towne Center officially closed after being acquired by developer The Ardent Companies.
Until now, only four anchor stores remained operating at the site: JCPenney, Dillard’s, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Elev8.
Multimillion-Dollar Sale Drives Transformation
The main JCPenney store, covering 122,000 square feet, was sold in December for $7 million.
The new owner is the same developer responsible for revitalizing the entire shopping complex.
Company representatives said they cannot yet reveal how the space will be integrated into the new project.
However, it emerged that the brand that will occupy the site will generate excitement among area residents.
A New Urban Concept for Seminole Towne Center
Ardent’s plan calls for a mixed-use development that will include retail stores, a hotel, and a residential building with 300 apartments.
Among the most notable projects is the construction of a 156,000-square-foot Costco in the space previously occupied by Macy’s.
The design also includes around 850 parking spaces and a gas station.
The opening of the new wholesale supermarket is projected for late 2026 or early 2027.
Demolition and Construction Phases
Demolition of the current mall could begin between the second and third quarters of 2026.
The project will be developed in stages, starting at the southern end of the property.
Although the exact schedule has not yet been fully defined, the first phase is expected to open in 2027.
Meanwhile, no closure has been announced for Dillard’s, Dick’s Sporting Goods, or Elev8.
Impact of the Closure on JCPenney’s Presence
With the departure of this branch, the number of JCPenney stores in Florida will fall to 43.
The JCPenney Florida closure symbolizes the shift in shopping habits and the evolution of retail in the region.
For many customers, the store represented a familiar place for family shopping for years.
Now, the land it occupied for nearly 30 years will become part of a new urban model aimed at revitalizing the area, according to The US Sun and WKMG-TV.
