Indiana Floods Leave Five Dead and Hundreds Evacuated in Historic Crisis

- Indiana floods
- More than 350 evacuations
- Federal emergency assistance approved
Severe storms battering Indiana have left at least five people dead, hundreds evacuated, and communities underwater, amid what Indianapolis officials describe as the most serious flooding in more than three decades.
Governor Mike Braun confirmed the deaths and urged residents to stay away from flooded areas as emergency operations continue and the risk of further flooding persists.
- Why it matters: The emergency is not over. The National Weather Service maintains a flash flood warning this Sunday for central Indiana, where additional storms are still expected.
- Key points: The White House approved a Presidential Emergency Declaration requested by Braun, a measure that will make up to $5 million available to support response efforts.
Federal assistance arrives after the damage

- The figure: More than 350 evacuations were carried out in Delaware County alone, according to Braun, along with numerous rescues of people affected by rising floodwaters.
The storms also caused power outages that affected as many as 300,000 homes simultaneously, including entire cities, expanding the impact of an emergency that began after heavy rainfall was recorded starting Thursday.

Federal assistance may be used for water rescues, evacuations, shelters, medical transportation, emergency supplies, sandbag placement, and the deployment of equipment to affected communities.
- The process: Braun had declared a state of emergency on Thursday in response to the flash flooding. He later requested a federal declaration, which was approved after a call with President Donald Trump.
Indianapolis faces its worst flooding in more than 30 years
Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett warned that the capital of Indiana is experiencing its most severe flooding in more than 30 years and urged residents to follow instructions from local authorities.
Images shared on social media show overflowing rivers, residential areas covered by water, and rescue teams using inflatable boats to reach people trapped by the Indiana floods, according to EFE, The Guardian and FOX 8.
- What residents can do: Authorities are urging people to avoid flooded roads and areas, monitor local alerts, and immediately comply with any evacuation orders. Shelters have also been opened in Indianapolis for residents who need to leave their homes.
- The limitation: Although federal assistance is now available and rescue operations continue, the threat remains active. Forecast storms and the flash flood warning continue to place central Indiana at risk while authorities assess the full extent of the damage.
