A federal agent opened fire during an operation early Wednesday morning in Willowbrook, prompting a large mobilization of local and federal authorities.

The incident occurred near the intersection of 126th Street and Mona Boulevard, according to official information.

A spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the involvement of the U.S. Border Patrol or the Department of Homeland Security.

The law-enforcement response included multiple agencies and personnel equipped with specialized tactical gear.

Immigration Operation Shooting in Willowbrook

Shortly after 7:00 a.m., Border Patrol notified the Sheriff’s Department that it was conducting an operation in the area.

According to the LASD, the shooting occurred shortly after that notification.

The Department of Homeland Security issued a statement to ABC7 explaining the context of the operation.

According to DHS, the operation began in the nearby city of Compton.

Federal Immigration Operation and Initial Report

The target was described as a “violent undocumented criminal from El Salvador.”

The individual was identified as William Eduardo Morán Carballo.

DHS stated that Carballo is involved in a human smuggling operation.

Authorities also said he has two prior arrests for inflicting corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant.

The federal agency added that an immigration judge issued a final order of removal against Carballo in 2019.

The Shooting and Attempted Escape

According to the Department of Homeland Security, the suspect attempted to evade arrest in a dangerous manner.

During the attempt, he allegedly used his vehicle to ram law-enforcement officers.

DHS said agents feared for their lives and safety during the operation.

In response, one federal agent fired his weapon in self-defense.

Authorities confirmed that the undocumented immigrant was not struck by gunfire.

After the shooting, the suspect attempted to flee on foot.

He was ultimately apprehended by law enforcement.

According to DHS, the suspect was not injured during the incident.

However, an officer with U.S. Customs and Border Protection was injured.

No additional details were provided regarding the severity of the agent’s injuries.

Authorities’ Response and Developing Situation

The scene was secured by federal agents wearing specialized tactical equipment.

Deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department also responded.

Officers from the California Highway Patrol took part in the operation.

The heavy police presence led to a large deployment throughout Willowbrook.

Authorities have not said whether nearby residents were at additional risk.
