Growing controversy over alleged ICE medical negligence
It also exposes potential failures in how individuals with severe medical conditions are treated while in custody.
Paralyzed migrant detained without proper assistance
The man, originally from Brazil, arrived in the United States in 2021 with his wife.
Two years ago, he became paralyzed after a life-changing event. He went from being a kung fu instructor to relying on a wheelchair.
Over time, he partially regained mobility in his arms and legs. Even so, he still requires constant assistance for daily activities.

Three months ago, he was detained by ICE in Newark. According to his wife, he has no criminal record.
During the arrest, he was not allowed to bring his crutches.
“The crutches were left in the car because they didn’t let him take them,” she said.
The family claims he was forced to stand and walk despite his physical limitations.
Family reports worsening health inside detention
Since his detention, the family says his condition has deteriorated.
They claim he has been forced to walk long distances.
They also report a lack of proper medical attention as part of the ongoing ICE medical negligence case.
During a recent video call, his wife noticed a decline in his physical condition.
Shortly afterward, he was hospitalized for the third time after fainting and collapsing.
“He can’t be in court because he was in the hospital,” his wife said.
“I haven’t been able to speak with him—I don’t know what happened,” she added.
The family fears his condition will continue to worsen.
Activists warn of systemic problem
The case is being supported by Movimiento Cosecha, which says this is not an isolated incident.
“We have received cases of people with leukemia, cancer, and people living with HIV,” a spokesperson stated.
They also mentioned cases involving elderly individuals and young people with autism.
“Medical neglect is something systemic,” the spokesperson said.
The situation was described as an injustice against humanity.
Meanwhile, the family has filed a habeas corpus petition.
They are seeking his release as soon as possible, emphasizing the urgency of the ICE medical negligence case.
“His condition is only getting worse. I am very afraid for his life,” his wife said.
So far, ICE has not issued an official statement.
