The sudden death of Gerson Leos, keyboardist and bassist of Banda MS, shocked the regional Mexican music world after the musician collapsed during a baseball game in Mazatlán on January 6.
His bandmate and the group’s vocalist, Alan Ramírez, recounted with deep sadness how he found him lifeless on the field.
The statements were made during the artist’s funeral, held on January 7 in front of family members, friends, and colleagues.
The band and its team are still processing the unexpected loss.
“He Was Already Lying There”: Alan Ramírez’s Account
In an interview with Yo amo mi Mazatlán, Ramírez explained that the call caught him by surprise. “I was arriving from Guadalajara, I went to eat with my wife and my children, and Chilas’ wife called me,” he said.
“She told me he had gotten sick on the field… we rushed over and when I arrived he was already lying there,” he recounted, visibly affected. The vocalist confirmed that several teammates tried to help him without success.

“They tried to help him, the same teammates who were with him,” Ramírez said while describing the resuscitation attempts. “They gave him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, they performed CPR, but no…,” he added.
According to what he was told at the scene, the musician showed slight signs of improvement for brief moments. “They say that like two times he kind of got better, but no… it couldn’t be done,” he said.
A Funeral Marked by Love and Pain
The posthumous tribute brought together members of Banda MS, family members, and loved ones of the musician. During the ceremony, they performed “El color de tus ojos” as a final farewell. Floral arrangements, mostly white wreaths, filled the viewing room.
The atmosphere reflected the deep impact Leos left both on and off the stage. Sergio Lizárraga, leader of the group, also expressed his sorrow over the loss. “We started the year with a great loss (…) We’re going to miss him very much,” he said.
He described Leos as “a great person, but above all, a great musician.” He recalled that Leos was the youngest member of the group and that they shared meaningful moments together. Lizárraga explained that he went immediately to Club Deportivo Sarabia after being notified.
“There was nothing left to do… Gerson was already lying there,” he said. He added that the shock was greater because he had just seen him happy with his son the day before. “We lost a great musician,” he concluded.

What Is Known About His Death
Although no official cause has been issued by local authorities, Mexican media reported that he allegedly died of a sudden heart attack.
Witnesses said that “he collapsed in front of his teammates and spectators.” Despite resuscitation efforts and the arrival of paramedics, he no longer showed vital signs. The incident occurred during the middle of the game.
Gerson Leos, 36, was originally from Mazatlán and was an essential part of Banda MS’s sound. He was married to mezzo-soprano Sarah Holcombe de Leos.
He was the father of three children: Jorge Alberto, Rebeca, and Daniel. His musical legacy will continue to resonate among fans of the group, marking the Gerson Leos final moments as a profound loss, according to Univisión.
