The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has begun sending more than $23.8 million to 640,038 Grubhub drivers and customers who were harmed by practices authorities described as deceptive and illegal.

Payments will primarily arrive by checks sent through the mail, although some recipients will receive their money through PayPal.

Those who are eligible should pay close attention to the deadline for accepting or cashing their refund.

The refunds are connected to allegations brought against Grubhub by the FTC and the Illinois Attorney General’s Office in December 2024.

Authorities alleged that the food delivery platform engaged in several illegal practices. Among them, they said Grubhub misled drivers about how much money they could expect to earn from making deliveries.

The FTC also accused Grubhub of blocking some customers from their accounts, preventing them from accessing their funds and redeeming gift cards.

Another allegation stated that restaurants were unfairly and deceptively listed on the platform without their authorization.

Grubhub Drivers and Customers Are Among Those Receiving Refunds

The newly announced distribution includes 640,038 payments totaling more than $23.8 million.

The FTC said money will be sent both to drivers harmed by claims about their potential earnings and to customers affected by the company’s conduct.

The announcement does not establish a single amount that every beneficiary will receive, meaning individual FTC Grubhub refund payments may vary.

As part of the previously reached settlement, Grubhub was also required to make changes to its operations, including:

  • Accurately representing driver pay
  • Providing a process for disputing account suspensions
  • Listing restaurants only when it has their consent

You Have 30 or 90 Days to Claim the Refund

Most eligible recipients will receive a check by mail. In those cases, the FTC says the check must be cashed within the 90-day period stated on it.

Those who receive their refund through PayPal will have 30 days to accept the payment.
