3-Year-Old Girl Dies After Becoming Trapped in a Toy Kitchen in Florida

A 3-year-old girl, identified as Briella Holmes, died after spending several days in critical condition following a Florida toy kitchen accident in which she became trapped inside a toy kitchen while under the care of a babysitter in Boynton Beach, Florida, authorities said.

The incident occurred on July 23, when police received a 911 call shortly after 11:00 a.m. reporting that a young child had been found unconscious and not breathing at a home in the Meadows of Boynton Beach community.

Briella Holmes Remained Hospitalized for Several Days

When officers arrived at the scene, they began life-saving measures before emergency responders transported Briella to a nearby hospital.

She remained in critical condition for several days before passing away on July 27.

How Did the Accident Happen?

According to the preliminary investigation, Briella and one of her siblings were under the care of a babysitter, who left the home and placed the children in the care of her husband.

Authorities said the man remained on the second floor of the house while the children played downstairs. He reportedly came downstairs periodically to check on them and bring them snacks.

During one of those visits, he found Briella with her head trapped inside the toy kitchen. He immediately freed her and began CPR while waiting for emergency personnel to arrive.

According to Briella’s brother, several toys had fallen inside the toy kitchen, and Briella became trapped while trying to retrieve them.

Cause of Death

The Palm Beach County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Briella died from positional asphyxia and ruled the case an accidental death.

CBS 12 News reported that the toy kitchen involved in the Florida toy kitchen accident had been purchased through Facebook Marketplace.

Authorities have not disclosed exactly which part of the toy trapped the child, nor have they announced whether the investigation could result in criminal charges.
