Costco is preparing to enter the Medicare market through a partnership with SCAN Health Plan, which will bring new health plans for seniors to just three states initially.

  • The proposal could incorporate services that many customers already find within their stores, such as pharmacy, vision, and hearing services.

Why it matters: The arrival of a brand like Costco expands options for those who must choose their Medicare coverage. However, the launch will be limited and still depends on regulatory approval.

Costco Partners with SCAN to Enter Medicare

Costco has joined forces with SCAN Health Plan, a nonprofit organization specializing in senior care, to develop a new line of health insurance products.

According to information reported by Fox Business, the partnership initially contemplates Medicare Advantage plans in two states and a Medicare supplemental plan, known as Medigap, in a third state.

  • The companies have not yet revealed which three states these will be or exactly when the plans will be offered.
  • The initiative is still under regulatory review, so the final details may depend on the corresponding approvals.

Pharmacy, Vision, and Hearing Services Could Be Part of the Plan

One of the most attractive aspects of the partnership is the possibility of connecting medical coverage with services that Costco already offers.

  • The proposal could include a revamped pharmacy experience, over-the-counter medication benefits through Medflex, and coverage for vision, hearing, and other benefits focused on seniors.

According to a report first published by The Wall Street Journal, the plans would be offered in Costco stores but also available through insurance agents and websites, according to the information disclosed so far.

The Partnership Aims to Simplify Senior Care

SCAN explained that the project seeks to reduce the fragmented experience that seniors may face when accessing medical services and using their insurance benefits.

Costco CEO Ron Vachris noted that the collaboration expands an existing relationship between the two organizations and is part of the company’s goal of offering value to its members.

SCAN currently serves members in 33 counties across California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, New Mexico, and Washington, although this does not necessarily mean that these are the states selected for Costco’s new launch.

Important Details About the New Plans Are Still Pending

For now, the costs, premiums, medical networks, and specific conditions of the products have not been publicly announced.

What’s next: Regulatory approval will be the next key step. Once Costco and SCAN reveal the states, prices, and definitive benefits, beneficiaries will be able to compare whether these new plans really represent a convenient alternative to other available Medicare options.
