Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has taken a narrow lead over Gavin Newsom on Polymarket, although other markets still have the California governor ahead, and more than two years remain before the presidential election.

Ocasio-Cortez has an 18% probability of winning the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028 on Polymarket, one point ahead of Gavin Newsom at 17%, according to data cited by NewsNation.

  • Why it matters: The movement places AOC at the center of a very early conversation about who could represent the Democratic Party in the next presidential election, but these figures are not voter polls.

The Democratic representative from New York narrowly moved ahead of Newsom in predictions about who will ultimately win the party’s presidential nomination.

According to Polymarket data reported Wednesday, Ocasio-Cortez reached 18%, while the California governor stood at 17%.

Third place is also very close. Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff was at approximately 16%.

  • By the numbers: AOC, Newsom, and Ossoff are separated by just two percentage points on Polymarket.
  • The limitation: These percentages reflect the expectations of market participants, not Democratic voters’ preferences.

Therefore, the result does not mean that Ocasio-Cortez currently leads among Democratic voters or that she is guaranteed a presidential nomination.

Kalshi Still Has Newsom Ahead

The picture changes when another prediction market is considered.

On Kalshi, Newsom remains the favorite to win the Democratic nomination in 2028, while Ocasio-Cortez ranks second, according to the reference information.

The difference between the two platforms shows just how open the race remains and how quickly expectations can change.

  • The difference: Polymarket ranks Ocasio-Cortez first, while Kalshi keeps Newsom in the lead.
  • What it means: Prediction markets measure expectations about a future outcome and can shift as candidates emerge, polls are released, and political events unfold.

These figures also cannot establish that either candidate will ultimately run in the presidential primaries.

AOC’s Rise Opens the Debate Over 2028

Ocasio-Cortez’s rise raises a question that is likely to follow the Democratic Party for the next several years: which figures could become competitive candidates capable of reclaiming the White House?

For now, Polymarket offers only a snapshot of very early expectations.

The uncertainty: It remains unclear whether AOC’s rise signals a potentially competitive campaign or reflects temporary shifts among prediction-market participants.

What’s next: The rankings could change substantially before the field of Democratic contenders takes shape.

The data does, however, put Ocasio-Cortez back in the national conversation about AOC 2028, this time ahead of another name generating significant expectations: Gavin Newsom.
