• ALMA app alerts during ICE encounters
  • Legal and emotional resources in one tool
  • Community support strengthened amid ICE operations

A new technological tool aims to become a lifeline for thousands of immigrants in the United States facing encounters with immigration agents.

It is ALMA (Apoyo Legal Migrante y Alerta), an application launched at the end of November by several migrant rights organizations.

The app was designed as a rapid-response system that allows immediate notification to relatives and allies when a person is detained.

Its main purpose is to connect the community, within seconds, to legal and emotional support networks during high-risk situations.

A panic button in the ALMA app triggers immediate help

Aplicación ALMA que alerta sobre ICE, ALMA app alerts if you're detained by ICEALMA works as a preventive tool: if a user encounters ICE agents and manages to activate the app, their contacts receive an instant alert.

The mechanism allows relatives, lawyers, or community leaders to react immediately, initiate legal protocols, or head to the location of the incident.

The function is designed to be intuitive, so it can be used even under pressure or in tense environments.

“It serves several functions, including helping people learn about their rights, create family emergency plans in case they are separated, and it also has an alert button for when someone is detained by ICE,” explained Jocelyn Duarte, director of SALEF.

Real-time location and access to critical information

One of ALMA’s most important features is its integrated locator, which allows families to identify where the detained person was taken.

This prevents hours of uncertainty for families who often have no idea where their loved ones are after an immigration operation.

The app also facilitates direct communication between contacts, making coordination of legal and community responses faster and more efficient.

Duarte emphasized that the tool was designed to “ensure our families have an emergency plan and are prepared in the event of a detention or deportation.”

Legal, health, and emotional resources in one place

Beyond real-time alerts, the ALMA app gathers a series of resources to strengthen the community in the face of immigration crises.

The platform offers updated legal information, links to health and emotional support services, and contacts for community organizations in Los Angeles County.

Among the available resources is guidance from two attorneys who collaborate with SALEF, offering families direction during the crucial first steps following a detention.

Centralizing these services seeks to reduce misinformation and prevent people from making rushed decisions in moments of crisis.

ALMA app: A tool created to respond to raids and emergencies

The organizations behind ALMA note that the app was created in response to the increase in immigration operations across various U.S. cities.

Their goal, they state, is to provide families with a practical tool that functions as an immediate bridge between detention and assistance.

“The ALMA app is designed to expand the response to immigration raids,” Duarte explained, stressing the importance of acting swiftly and with preparation.

As concerns grow over new enforcement actions, the app is emerging as a key resource to strengthen safety and community organization, according to La Opinión.
