Alejandra Jaramillo Tries to Move On, but Mexican Fans Continue the Backlash

- Mexico Has Not Forgotten the Alejandra Jaramillo Controversy
- Calls Grow for Her Departure From Univision
- Social Media Backlash Continues
The Alejandra Jaramillo controversy continues to dominate social media after Ecuadorian television host and influencer Alejandra Jaramillo found herself at the center of a firestorm following Mexico’s crushing elimination against England in the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Rather than maintaining a professional or neutral stance as a public figure working for a Spanish-language television network with a massive Mexican audience, «La Caramelo» ignited social media by sharing Instagram Stories in a mocking tone celebrating England’s victory.
Although in recent hours the presenter has attempted to use the old strategy of «turning the page» by posting romantic and cheerful photos alongside her Colombian boyfriend, Beta Mejía, exercising, sharing previously unseen moments from her life in Miami, as well as her trip to Ecuador, the Mexican public has made it clear that it has a long memory and has no intention of forgiving what many consider a profound betrayal.
The Arrogant Response That Was the Last Straw

What ultimately destroyed whatever sympathy some viewers still had for her was the defiant and arrogant attitude the television host adopted after receiving the first wave of criticism.
Instead of offering a public apology or showing even a little empathy toward the country that opened the doors to the international market for her, Alejandra Jaramillo chose to confront the situation in what many considered the worst possible way. In a video published by her partner, Beta Mejía, the Ecuadorian left a comment that sparked massive outrage and multiplied the attacks against her:
«Friends, I’m going to celebrate whichever country I want because nobody has the right to tell me what I can or can’t celebrate. Celebrating England’s victory—or the victory of any other country still in the World Cup—isn’t disrespectful to anyone. I did it, and I’m going to keep doing it. Insulting people is what’s disrespectful. Goal kisses for everyone.»
This statement, described by many internet users as cynical, arrogant, and hypocritical, fueled even more anger among Mexican fans. Viewers were quick to remind her that the issue was never which team she legitimately supports, but rather the irony, mockery, and contempt with which she ridiculed Mexican supporters—an attitude they considered unacceptable for someone who works on television programs sustained largely by the Mexican audience.
A Quick Getaway to Ecuador to Eat Crab

In what many perceived as a desperate attempt to divert attention from the digital backlash, «La Caramelo» made a surprise and brief trip to her native Ecuador, a journey she had not announced to anyone and apparently hoped would serve as a peaceful escape from the controversy.
Through her official social media accounts, the Univision panelist resurfaced by sharing a video in which she happily enjoyed seafood in Guayaquil, accompanied by a nostalgic caption about how much she had missed eating mangrove crab.
However, the strategy of projecting calm while showcasing the cuisine of her homeland proved to be a complete failure in the face of the Mexican audience’s relentless memory. Users immediately flooded the post with comments reminding her that they believe her actions continue to carry consequences.
Social Media Demands Consequences: «Out of Univision» — Alejandra Jaramillo Controversy

The comments on her Instagram account (@ale_jaramillo) reflect what many have described as one of the most intense waves of online backlash in recent memory. Messages such as, «Stay over there, we don’t need you here, bye,» «You did that reality show in Mexico, you made a living thanks to Mexico, how ungrateful,» «Careful, you’re forgetting that Mexico destroys careers,» «Mexico, do your magic,» and the repeatedly posted «Out of Univision» show that thousands of users are formally demanding that the television network immediately dismiss the host of ¡Siéntese quien pueda!.
Many social media users also pointed out that the Hispanic population in the United States is predominantly Mexican—around 60 percent—and argued that alienating the audience that watches her programs amounts to professional self-sabotage. Several users also alleged that Alejandra had begun deleting negative comments from her photos in an attempt to make it appear as though nothing had happened, a move they described as cowardly.

The online confrontation escalated to an intensely personal level when critics began bringing up one of the most painful chapters of the influencer’s past.
Numerous users began demanding in the comments section that, instead of avoiding reality by eating seafood, she explain the real reasons why she left her home country several years ago, directly linking her to the tragic murder of her then-boyfriend, actor and television presenter Efraín Ruales.
Pointed comments such as, «Why don’t you do a storytime about why your ex was killed?» appeared throughout the post. Among sections of the Mexican audience, claims also circulated alleging that Jaramillo has avoided permanently returning to Ecuador because of fear and the unanswered questions that still surround the shocking 2021 crime, instead using her work in Miami as a refuge.

As an endless wave of Mexican flags continues to flood every one of her social media posts, Alejandra Jaramillo’s future in American Spanish-language television appears increasingly uncertain. Although she continues to receive support from a segment of her fellow Ecuadorians, the reality of the entertainment industry remains harsh: the audience ultimately decides.
Public figures and thousands of viewers have already begun promoting a boycott of Univision until the network’s executives take action regarding the controversy.
With a dispute that has already spilled over and even triggered a digital backlash against her ally Karime Pindter after she attempted to defend her, Alejandra Jaramillo is discovering the hard way that while the Mexican public is known for warmly welcoming foreigners, it can also be unforgiving toward those it believes have shown it disrespect.
